Domovní zdi, chodníky a ulice ve městě jsou v neustálém kontaktu s nejrůznějšími uživateli, způsoby využití a činnostmi: lidé chodí pěšky, rodiče běhají s kočárky, kola náhle brzdí, skateboardisté nacvičují své triky, koloběžky a auta jezdí plnou rychlostí a mnoho dalšího. Všechny tyto činnosti nevyhnutelně zanechávají na povrchu materiálu stopy, jako jsou škrábance, díry a praskliny. Tyto stopy opotřebení jsou často vnímány jako něco negativního.
