Kapitalistický systém se podle sociologa Immanuela Wallersteina dostává v celosvětovém měřítku do strukturální krize, jejímž výsledkem může, avšak nemusí být spravedlivější a demokratičtější uspořádání společnosti. Wallersteinova Utopistikanabízí realistickou analýzu současné situace a perspektiv pro takovou společenskou změnu, jež bude zároveň žádoucí i možná. Nesnaží se tedy navazovat na tradice utopického myšlení a konstruovat ideální, avšak sotva uskutečnitelnou budoucnost. Namísto toho usiluje o vyvolání diskuse o tom, jaké společenské struktury by nám všem mohly lépe vyhovovat a jaké strategie by nás mohly vést tímto směrem.
According to sociologist Immanuel Wallerstein, the capitalist system is entering a structural crisis on a global scale, the result of which may or may not be a fairer and more democratic organization of society. Wallerstein's Utopianism offers a realistic analysis of the current situation and perspectives for such a social change that will be both desirable and possible. Therefore, they do not try to follow the traditions of utopian thinking and construct an ideal, but hardly realizable future. Instead, it seeks to provoke discussion about what social structures might suit us all better, and what strategies might lead us in that direction.

Immanuel WALLERSTEIN (1930–2019) Ve své badatelské činnosti se zaměřil na tři hlavní oblasti analýzy světového systému – historický vývoj moderního světosystému, současnou krizi kapitalistické světoekonomiky a struktury vědění.
Je autorem mnoha desítek knih, z nichž světový ohlas získaly zejména práce The Modern World-System (ve 3 svazcích, 1974, 1980 a 1989), Utopistics, Or Historical Choices for the Twenty-First Century (1998) a Unthinking Social Science: The Limits of Nineteenth-Century Paradigms (1991)
Immanuel WALLERSTEIN (1930-2019) In his research activity, he focused on three main areas of world system analysis – the historical development of the modern world system, the current crisis of the capitalist world economy, and the structure of knowledge.
He is the author of many dozens of books, of which the works The Modern World-System (in 3 volumes, 1974, 1980 and 1989), Utopistics, Or Historical Choices for the Twenty-First Century (1998) and Unthinking Social Science: The Limits of Nineteenth-Century Paradigms (1991)
