Wallersteinova Utopistika nabízí realistickou analýzu současné situace a perspektiv pro takovou společenskou změnu, jež bude zároveň žádoucí i možná. Nesnaží se tedy navazovat na tradice utopického myšlení a konstruovat ideální, avšak sotva uskutečnitelnou budoucnost. Namísto toho usiluje o vyvolání diskuse o tom, jaké společenské struktury by nám všem mohly lépe vyhovovat a jaké strategie by nás mohly vést tímto směrem.
Immanuel WALLERSTEIN (1930–2019) vyučoval a bádal na Kolumbijské univerzitě (1958–71), McGill University (1971-76), École des hautes études en sciences sociales v Paříži (s přestávkami zde působil mezi lety 1975 a 1995) a Binghamton University/suny (1976–99), kde rovněž vedl Fernand Braudel Center for the Study of Economics, Historical Systems, and Civilizations. Od roku 2000 působil jako vedoucí výzkumný pracovník na Yaleově univerzitě. V letech 1994–98 byl prezidentem Mezinárodní sociologické asociace a v letech 1993–95 vedl Gulbenkianovu komisi pro restrukturaci sociálních věd. Ve své badatelské činnosti se zaměřil na tři hlavní oblasti analýzy světového systému – historický vývoj moderního světosystému, současnou krizi kapitalistické světoekonomiky a struktury vědění.
Wallerstein's Utopianism offers a realistic analysis of the present situation and the prospects for social change that is both desirable and possible. It does not, therefore, attempt to follow the traditions of utopian thought and construct an ideal but barely realizable future. Instead, it seeks to provoke a debate about what social structures might better suit us all and what strategies might lead us in that direction.
Immanuel WALLERSTEIN (1930-2019) taught and researched at Columbia University (1958-71), McGill University (1971-76), the École des hautes études en sciences sociales in Paris (where he taught intermittently between 1975 and 1995), and Binghamton University/SUNY (1976-99), where he also directed the Fernand Braudel Center for the Study of Economics, Historical Systems, and Civilizations. Since 2000, he has been a Senior Research Fellow at Yale University. He was president of the International Sociological Association in 1994-98 and chaired the Gulbenkian Commission on the Restructuring of the Social Sciences in 1993-95. His research has focused on three main areas of world-system analysis: the historical development of the modern world-system, the current crisis of the capitalist world-economy, and the structure of knowledge.
